Moving into a new apartment can be exciting and daunting in equal parts. We asked elm & lilli interior design extraordinaire, Paul Hecker from Hecker Guthrie for his expert advice which will be useful when considering how to fit out your new apartment. Here are Paul's top tips:

/ Make sure the scale of the furniture suits the space. For example, buy a TV and sofa that's in proportion to the rest of the room.

/ Lamp light is always preferable - always choose a warm globe.

/ De-clutter accordingly. Opt for a bed with storage underneath such as the Leila bed from Jardan.

/ Luxury doesn't always mean expensive - fresh flowers or a lovely fern are a simple way to up the ante.

/ Don't use your balcony as storage - bikes and clothes horses never make for a nice view.

/ Understanding that when you move, your existing furniture may not work - be critical. Expect to buy new furniture that suits that apartment.

/ Artwork - personal black and white photographs framed in nice white frames is so much more seductive than cheap art.

/ Don't buy furniture suites such as a matching bed, bedside tables and chest of drawers.

/ Be prepared to wait and save up for something beautiful than settle for second best.
